  • Tumor was removed using a laser beam at Regional Cancer Center

    07.09.2020 15:07:45

For the first time in the Irkutsk region a tumor of the bladder was removed without scalpels and punctures, without blood loss, and the patient got to his feet the very next day. Doctors call this method economical as it preserves patient's organs the most. In addition, during the operation, patient remained conscious: operation was performed without general anesthesia, which is not needed for this type of surgical intervention, and for this patient it was also dangerous for medical reasons. All this became possible thanks to a new thulium laser was purchased for the oncourology department of cancer center. So, now the doctors of the center won’t have to resort to abdominal operations as often.

“This laser allows to remove a tumor in a single block in order, firstly, to reduce the spread of tumor cells inside the bladder and, secondly, to make an accurate diagnosis: by analyzing a tumor extracted with the laser, morphologists will be able to answer whether it has grown into a muscle layer.” comments Olga Baklanova, head of the oncourology department of the Regional Cancer Center, candidate of medical sciences, urologist of the highest qualification category.

Previously, Russian urologists have used this equipment only for the removal of prostate adenoma and the treatment of urolithiasis. Its use in oncology is the know-how of doctors at the Regional Cancer Center.
